Lots of internal nudges recently to write here again in a way that fits where I’m at, and where I believe others may be as well.
This obviously isn’t news to anyone, but modern life is accelerating quickly. Too quickly to manage it seems. So quickly that I’m continually feeling a pull away from my center and working my way back again. And again.
What is center though anyway?
Mine will be different from yours.
Similar in some ways I’m sure, but personal to each of us. But it takes work.
The Finding Mastery Podcast episode below is what actually inspired this first post in many ways. I’m a long-time fan of the show and this NYC AMA episode served up many of the “greatest hits” topics I needed to be reminded of in this moment.
Becoming your very best (not necessarily the best)
The power of mindfulness and the present moment
Working on and from within yourself, the inner work
Dr. Mike talks a lot about the “inner work” as key for not only unlocking and achieving high performance and mastery, but also for understanding what your center is so that we can work from the inside out, rather than letting the outside world dictate things for us through more, faster, and better.
More, for what? Faster, to what end? Better, for who?
If we’re working on becoming our very best, then we need to ask ourselves real honest questions and give equally honest answers about what “our very best” looks like, and why being our best more often is important to us?
Equally if not more importantly, who does it serve outside of ourselves?
Give the episode a listen, or watch on YouTube below, and bring a notebook.
If you only have a moment, I recommend this 10-minute chapter on Redefining Success: Internal vs External to get the best feel of what the rest of the conversation, and then listen to the whole thing when you have time.
Thanks for reading,
Paul
