Coming Back to Substack and Turning 40
After taking the summer off from writing I’ve had time to think about what a comeback to Substack should look like and why I needed take a break in the first place.
When I set out to write the first time around, I wanted to share key insights from my journaling practice, and while that worked for a while, I quickly found that the weekly cadence I had committed to was not sustainable. I could barely keep up with my journal, let alone weekly posts, and I found myself simply writing for the newsletter and not for myself. Ultimately, I needed a hard reset.
Five months later and fresh off my 40th birthday, now seems like right moment to restart the (sub)stack, albeit with a few changes. I’ll be switching to a monthly cadence with a shorter format, and also plan to share with you more of the posts and content I find valuable in hopes that you may too - I’ll probably use Substack Notes for that.
I’m also changing the name from My Notes on Things to Staying In The Game.
Why? Because when asked by a good friend this past week what the most important lesson I’ve learned over the last year was, I immediately knew that it was “staying in the game,” meaning, making choices with how you spend your mental and physical energy in a way that keeps your forward progress moving and reduces the risk of a setback (at work, in the gym, at home with the kids).
If you are moving forward, even with less visible gains in the short term, you will see truly amazing results in the weeks, months, and years to follow.
That concept means a lot to me and I hope that by sharing it, it may start to mean something to you as well.
Thanks for reading,
Paul
Move forward. Stay in the game.
